Individual Placements
Youth Development Program
Volunteers are encouraged to play games with the children, help them with their homework and partake in afternoon activities. Participants may also lead and teach classes such as English, painting, drawing and music. This organization seeks to provide a strong moral structure in which high risk youth from the streets of Cusco are able to improve their self-esteem and gain important life skills.
Children's After School Program
Work with children, providing support, love, and being a mentor. Volunteers will lead art classes and educational games, help with reading and homework, and discuss topics such as world religion, culture, environmental issues, and much more. There are lot of activities and volunteers will have a hand in anything that organization needs help with. Volunteers will work with either age groups of 5-8 or 9-15.
Public School
This school is open to female students only, between the ages of 4 - 11 years old. Volunteers will help teach English (especially with pronunciation) and assist the teachers in their duties. They may also help with support services for the students including mentoring and general assistance with homework or other activities. Volunteers will observe teaching techniques unique to Peru.
Policy and Human Rights Organization
Volunteers will work in areas such as legal rights, mental health and train individuals in areas of human rights. The organization works to defend men, women, children and victims of violations who have been mistreated or those who have suffered a violation of their fundamental rights. The organization trains volunteers to help in all areas and work with those they support.
Nursery School
Volunteers work with children between 3 and 5 years old. Volunteers should love being around young children and will help out the supervisors in any activities. Volunteers will play, sing, paint, work on puzzles, and help bring fun and joy to these children's lives.
Pharmacy
Volunteers assist the pharmacy staff to fill prescriptions, ensure that current medicines are sealed, and that medicines are stocked. Volunteers will learn about healthcare in Peru, view the differences between Peru and US practices, and work directly with local pharmacists.
Communications Internship at a Music Institute
Volunteers will be responsible for the sustainable development of a music institute's communications program. Participants will help with updating and maintaining the institute's website, coordinating marketing campaigns for musical events, managing volunteers
for concerts and projects and more. Volunteers should be creative and self-motivated, as they will have the opportunity to work
independently on many projects.
Music Institute
Assist at a music institute as it strives to provide a superior musical education for its students while encouraging the spread of traditional Andean music. Participants will be able to assist with basic training programs for ages 12 or older, as well as early education programs for children between 3 and 11 years old. Participants can also help with projects such as marketing and administration including the coordination of events.
Veterinary Clinic
Assist in various areas of the veterinary clinic under the supervision of the doctor or his staff. Volunteers will be responsible for assisting customers, bathing and trimming the animals, walking the dogs, and cleaning the cages or exercise areas. Volunteers will also be able to observe the doctor during surgeries and assist with handing the doctor surgical instruments. Participants will also be a great asset to the clinic by translating for English-speaking clients.
Conservation NGO
Work with a conservation NGO on a ecological reserve helping to plant and care for native plant species, prepare new areas for
planting, patrol forested areas to educate visitors on appropriate behavior in nature (don't litter, no fires, etc), assist with
workshops to raise the awareness of both children and adults in regards to conservation, help with recycling workshops and programs, distribute leaflets with information regarding the reserve, and much more.
Hospital
Located in the heart of Cusco this hospital caters to the lower income populations of the surrounding areas. Work with the local Cusqueños to promote good health and nutrition through activities in which the community can participate. Participants focus on patient care, assisting medical staff with various tasks and paperwork to learn medical terminology and office procedures. Participants will visit with patients in the waiting room and take basic stats such as height, weight, blood pressure, etc while learning about the medical system of Peru.
Mobile Clinic
This local clinic aims to provide quality healthcare to locals, transients and tourists alike. Doctors from the clinic often travel to provide patient care on-site, specifically to tourist hotels in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Become familiar with the Peruvian medical system by shadowing doctors and nurses and learning medical terminology while also assisting with translation services. Specific duties depend much on the participant's past experiences and qualifications with opportunities to serve as an active member of the team or as an observer.
Agricultural Animal Care Center
This organization has created an environment to care for the llamas and alpacas that are a historically vital piece of Peruvian culture. Raising these animals and harvesting their wool also leads to the preservation of traditional Incan spinning, dying, weaving practices. These cultural values are promoted among locals and tourists alike through workshops and demonstrations held at the center. Participants will work hands-on caring for the animals and learning the traditions of Peruvian heritage.
