Salamanca and ISA/ELAP have signed an exclusive partnership offering internships with the implementation of Salamanca's language tourism trademark initiative, Ciudad del Español (S.C.E) and the Chamber of Commerce. Through this partnership students will have the opportunity to intern in a variety of locations throughout the city. See individual placement descriptions below for more information.
As one of the top locations to learn the Spanish language, Salamanca (pop. 156,000) is not only a great place to study abroad, but is also the first program site where the initial group of ISA students studied in 1987. Salamanca is described by many as the ideal study abroad location because of the outstanding academic opportunities, assorted cultural activities, and proximity to the capital city of Madrid. Ciudad del Español Placements
Elementary Schools
Teach English in a local elementary school and gain classroom experience working with children from Salamanca. Native English speakers are needed to teach pronunciation, assist teachers in daily classroom duties, help with homework and participate in mentoring activities. Participants can expect to have weekly lessons with students between the ages of 5 - 16 years old.
Community Libraries
Be a part of the cultural heart of Salamanca and volunteer at the public library. Throughout the semester, volunteers will be able to contribute to this dynamic Spanish institution by helping plan, organize, and publicize weekly events. Activities include assisting with art and literature workshops, teaching English language classes, and planning cultural activities for people of all ages.
City Council Environmental Efforts
Assist with environmental projects and campaigns carried out by partnerships promoted through Salamanca's City Council. Projects may include reforestation, river clean up, educational workshops on recycling and public campaigns on environmental issues concerning the city of Salamanca.
Community Music
Become an active member in Salamanca's music community. Play with a city band, orchestra or school at local events. Rehearse and interact with students from Salamanca's Municipal School of Music and Dance.
Drug Awareness and Public Health Programs
Support Salamanca's Municipal Plan for Drug Dependency by working with a team of doctors, nurses and psychologists in their efforts to assist, educate and treat individuals with drug addiction. Students play an integral role in developing activities for patients as well as facilitating prevention and education workshops. Opportunities are also available to help city associations provide services to economically disadvantaged community members with varying medical conditions.
Association for Abused Women and Children
Work side-by-side with social workers and psychiatrists to improve the daily lives of economically disadvantaged women and children in Salamanca. The host organization provides activities and workshops to help build self esteem using support systems for abused women and children. Participants will work with a team of therapists and volunteers to create awareness workshops, take part in counseling activities and hold extra-curricular activities for children ages 5 - 18.
Office of Tourism and Cultural Initiatives
Play an integral role in Salamanca's tourism trademark initiative, Ciudad Del Español (SCE). Assist tourists with questions, organize cultural activities and represent the Office of Tourism at local events and festivals. Help with the translation of texts, pamphlets and tourism web sites related to Salamanca and the Castilla y Leó n region.
Chamber of Commerce Placements
Prior to beginning the placement, all students will attend seminars highlighting economic and socioeconomic activity in Salamanca and throughout Spain to better understand how businesses operate as well as gain insight into the various sectors of the Chamber of Commerce.
Placements fall under the following areas:
Transportation, Trade and Logistics
International Center for Transport and Foreign Trade
- Student placements will be businesses centered on international trade and transport. They will work in various sections of the industry including those of the customs agency sector and its import/export and vehicle dispatch functions. They will work in foreign trade consulting, transport, rental agencies, and private license management. Students will also have the opportunity to put their native English skills to use in contacting foreign customs agencies via phone and email.
Internal Center of Transportation of Goods and Services
- Students will intern with distribution center management companies. They will focus on the various sections of the business including: vehicle service, logistics, operations management, administration of the transportation sector, and co-op services such as the management of member companies and price negotiation on behalf of members.
Supply Chain Management
- Students will be assigned to organizations focused on supply chain management. They will be involved in planning and managing supply chain logistics including supplying raw materials and managing materials, distribution warehouses, handling and packaging, and distribution to point-of-purchase locations.
Technology Based Companies
Students will intern with organizations focused on the production, distribution, maintenance, and development of business technology. With an already established information technology base, students will work in various sections of an organization that operates in the CIS/MIS industry: network management, R&D, integrated project development, tech maintenance, and information management systems.
Agro Business (Agricultural Business)
Students will work with companies that manage the production, quality, and sale of various food products local to the province of Salamanca. They will focus on the various management aspects of the agricultural industry: production, quality control, logistics, commercial, and trade area.
Textile Sector
Students will intern with companies versed in the production, quality control, and sale of textile products including those for retail. They will gain first-hand knowledge of the different management sections of the textiles industry: production, quality control, logistics, commercial, and trade area.
Business Enterprise
Ideal for the entrepreneurial student, this internship will teach students about all aspects of starting and running a business from creation to development to operations. Students will work in a multitude of business services including: business development, legal, R&D, corporate communications and marketing, foreign trade, economic climate analysis, training, and continuing education.
